Edition 2: Westerns
A party at the edge of Hong Kong. A county fair. A car crash in the deserts of the Southwest. The denim-covered third edition of our journal seeks to examine the complexities of Westerns and the West, as well as the places where these concepts dissolve and shift like heat waves.

Beach Reads
As you sweat-addled readers know, the term ‘beach read’—the escapist romance, thriller, mystery paperback page-turners fit for vacations—is sometimes taken to have a pejorative connotation. Many writers have tried to distance themselves from the term because of its association with pulp novels and “chick lit” by misogynist and snobbish detractors. Sometimes, people speak of Colleen Hoover-style novels as if this is anything new, but there have always been mass-market books you pick up randomly for pleasure, and there always will be. Sometimes we need an uncomplicated pleasure.
The differentiation between highbrow and lowbrow itself has become tedious. Maybe it always has been.

Monologues Against Confession
This book is a collection of work created in the workshop series “Monologues Against Confession” that took place on March 25 and April 15th at Hive Mind Books in Brooklyn, New York, and on April 12th online.
The events were made possible by the The Lucille Lortel Theatre's Alcove New Play Development Program's Leap of Faith Initiative, Caridad Svich, Artistic Director. When I received the opportunity to develop my play, The Apologetics, I knew the necessary next step would be in taking the time to research the ideas central to the play: truth, identity, ideology, transness, relationship to place, care, burnout. These workshops were born out of this desire to research and a belief that creating spaces for people to dialogue is both crucial and necessary to the theatrical ecosystem.

Edition 1: Perverts
Peeking through your window, rotting in a bedroom teeming with clutter, rubbing each other by the pier, undressing onstage, watching mukbangs under the covers, hanging out your back pocket—perverts are all around us. Perverts are among us. Perverts are us. We are obsessive, maladjusted, hungry.
But who gets called a pervert? How has this term been used to other and criminalize people? How can we reclaim it? Or should we reclaim it? What are the ethics of perversion?
In our second journal, Edition 1: Perverts, we bring together a collection of essays, poems, short fiction, drama, and visual art that grapple with what perversion is, and through the lens of two characters, Libertine and Receiver, explore what it means to be a pervert.

When A Spotted Horse Is Not A Horse
Set in a fictional medieval kingdom, stable-boy Salt Lick and horse doctor Remedy use magic to become Princess Lenora’s noble steed in a monumental joust against their fearsome rival, Seth. Things quickly become more complicated than they seem when they encounter the sweet young Hopscotch, Seth’s unwilling steed.

Edition 0
Our beloved Edition 0! We gathered these pieces from our friends, former lovers, and childhood best friends. We wanted, not only to gather their thoughts on love, but to gather our loved ones together, to see their passions materialized, congealed, brought together in the union of a collective.

We are an art & publishing collective, and we like you and we love you and we need you!
We are Active Chapter!! We are an art and publishing collective based in New York, founded by Max Chu, Lucia Mumma, Eka Savajol, and XY Zhou. Our website is designed by Liam Tsang.
As artists and educators coming from a wide breadth of artistic disciplines, we strive for accessibility both in publishing and distribution—rethinking what it means to “publish” and pushing the boundaries of what a “book” can be. Our work focuses on transdisciplinary editorial styles, publishing across mediums, and collecting community stories that are often overlooked. We believe in community through friendship, and knowledge through community.
We have hosted workshops, including playwriting workshops and workshops for older adults, at venues like University Settlement Society and Hive Mind Books, with support from organizations like the Asian American Arts Alliance and the Lucille Lortel Theater.
